Association ‘Hoksebargse Mölln’

(Vereniging ‘Hoksebargse Mölln’)

Welcome to the ‘Hoksebargse Mölln’ Association. We are the proud guardians of the Oostendorper Watermill and the De Korenbloem Windmill, the pearls of Haaksbergen. Thanks to the passion of our volunteers, our monuments are in motion every week.

Whether the sails are turning in the wind or the water wheels are powered by the stream, here you see technology and tradition come together. We cordially invite you to come and see, learn, and enjoy this beautiful piece of Twente craftsmanship. Whether you come for a guided tour, a bag of flour from our own mill, a bottle of linseed oil from our centuries-old oil mill, or simply for the convivial atmosphere, the millers and oil pressers are ready to welcome you.

Back in time

Can you hear the creaking of centuries-old wood and the soothing murmur of the Buurserbeek? At the Hoksebargse Mölln, you literally step back in time. In the green heart of Haaksbergen, we proudly keep two icons of our regional history turning: the unique Oostendorper Watermill and our stately Windmill De Korenbloem.

Unique

The Ostend watermill is certainly unique. The grain mill and the oil mill are housed in separate buildings, each standing independently of the other at the sluice. This used to be common, but many mills in the Netherlands have been demolished, and the fact that these two mills are both still standing and operational in this configuration is unique.

Here, history is not a dusty book, but a living craft. Our volunteer millers and oil pressers tame the elements to grind grain and press oil, exactly as it was done centuries ago. Come by, smell the scent of freshly ground flour and pressed linseed oil, and discover the power of pure nature.

Discover the magic of the Hoksebargse Mölln. Where the Buurserbeek powers the centuries-old watermills and the windmill towers proudly above Haaksbergen. We keep history alive. Visit us and see the millers in action.

Visiting a mill is fun for young and old, and certainly worth the effort!

The Haaksbergen Mills

The Oostendorper Watermill

The Oostendorper Watermill was built in 1548. It is a double waterwheel mill; on the right bank stands a grain mill with two wheels, and on the left bank an oil mill with one wheel. It is precisely this combination that makes the mill so special.

In 1946, the oil mill was completely swept away by high water and subsequently restored in 1950. Since 1946, the mill has been owned by the Municipality of Haaksbergen. After a thorough restoration in 1987-1988, the mill was restored to its original state and opened to the public in May 1988 by Mr. Winsemius, former Minister of Housing.

Windmill De Korenbloem

The name of this beautiful mill is “Windmill De Korenbloem,” and its function is to grind grain. The mill was built in 1798 as an octagonal tower mill with angled braces.

In 1888, the platform was in such poor condition that it was demolished and replaced with sand to support the mill. From that time until 1991, the mill was therefore a belt mill.

Foundation “De Overijsselse Molen”

The Hoksebargse Mölln Association is supported by “De Overijsselse Molen” and strives to preserve the windmills in the province of Overijssel. Overijssel and windmills belong together. Anyone looking at the landscape of Overijssel cannot ignore them. Our windmills are a precious and irreplaceable asset and are an integral part of our surroundings. They define the silhouette of a city, village, or region. Windmills are the “beacons” in the landscape.
